BACKGROUND

The Lawrence County Recycling/Solid Waste Department carries out the County’s ten year plan for disposing, recycling, and reducing trash which includes reserving enough landfill space to accommodate what every person, business, and school throws away over a ten year period. The Department is funded through grants, money collected from county trash taken to landfills, and hauler licensing.  The Department:

** Helps Municipalities meet Act 101 requirements concerning waste and recycling programs; education; collection; and grant writing.

** Licenses and inspects vehicles used to haul municipal solid waste.

** Produces educational programs, handouts, and activities about recycling, composting, hauling, illegal dumping, household hazardous wastes, buying recycled products and other environmental issues.

** Organizes and assists nonprofit agencies, municipalities, counties and the state to provide economically and environmentally sound programs and information.

** Answers questions on recycling and environmental issues for residents, businesses, and others.

** Works with schools and businesses to reduce waste and increase recycling participation.

** Provides speakers for various organizations and groups.

** Organizes special collections for hard to dispose materials and items.

** Helps develop markets for recyclables.

** Organizes the courthouse recycling program.
